Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

- Approximately 20% of pregnancies will end in a miscarriage (a loss before 20 weeks) with the VAST majority being in the first trimester.
- Luckily, over 90% of those who have a first trimester miscarriage -- OFTEN due to an abnormal number of "chromosomes" -- will go on to have a healthy baby! (This does not diminish the sadness one may experience BUT it certainly should provide hope.)
- There are about 24,000 stillbirths in the US each year, defined as a loss after 20 weeks which amounts to 1 out of 100 pregnancies.
- BUT the flip side is that 99% of pregnancies that have made it to 20 weeks will continue to a live birth.
- The majority of stillbirths do not have an obvious cause, and while that may seem scary, we want to reiterate this as one more reason we should NOT fear the issues we cannot fully control.
- Everyone feels the grief surrounding pregnancy loss differently based on so many factors. Each person should seek help to improve their ability to move "THROUGH" their experience -- as opposed to thinking that they will "get over it".
- There are MANY organizations that connect women who have gone through this, as we know how powerful community and shared experience is in the healing process.
